Description

This brass plaque depicts a striding Hanuman, who is holding in his hand the medicinal plant Sanjeevani, which will cure Lakshman who has been wounded on the field of battle. These plaques were worn around the neck of itinerant mendicants or pilgrims. The plaque is from Karnataka and has, most probably, the figure of Rama standing on Hanuman’s head. Around the sides are pierced decorative elements and two parakeets are facing each other at the top. Above them would probably have been a protective cobra, but this has been lost to time. A metal stand has been specifically made for this piece to be displayed.
The size of the plaque is 4.5 x 0.75 x 4.75 inches. With the base, the size of the piece is 4.5 x 0.75 x 5 inches.
