Description

Versatile circular Art Deco teak table, which can be used as a side table in a living room, or as a bedside table in a bedroom. The Art Deco style was characterised by sleek lines, geometric shapes, and subtle yet intricate ornamentation, the latter shown here in the unusual curves of the feet. Sourced from Bangalore, the table is from the 1940s/50s.
Art Deco first appeared in Paris in the 1910s just before World War I and represented luxury, glamour, exuberance and faith in social and technological progress. It was an ornate style with rare and expensive materials, as well as new materials like stainless steel and reinforced concrete, which gave greater freedom of form.
The international style of Art Deco, which influenced Indian design, was known as Streamline Moderne and began in the 1930s. It was inspired by aerodynamic design and emphasized sleeker curving forms, polished surfaces, and sometimes nautical elements.
Through styling and design of the exterior and interior of anything from large structures to small objects, Art Deco has influenced buildings (from skyscrapers to cinemas), bridges, ships, ocean liners, trains, cars, trucks, buses, furniture, and everyday objects.
