Description

Vijayanagar style hand-carved Garuda and Hanuman from Kerala. The Vijayanagara Empire was a prominent medieval empire in South India, established in 1336. Unlike the naturalism present in the sculptures from the Chola dynasty, Vijayanagar figures are more heavily stylized in line, texture and design. The naturalism of the previous era is replaced with a still and motionless quality, as if the figures were frozen in time. The figures also tend to have more ornamentation with a focus on jewellery and the drapes of their clothes.
Garuda and Hanuman are both powerful, revered figures in Hinduism, known for their immense strength, loyalty, and devotion to the divine. Garuda, the divine eagle, is the eternal vehicle (vahana) of Lord Vishnu, while Hanuman is the devoted servant of Lord Rama, an avatar of Vishnu.
The size of Garuda is 26.5 (H) x 15 (W) x 8 (D) inches and Hanuman is 26.5 (H) x 8 (W) x 7 (D) inches.
