Description

These Art Deco folding chairs are from the 1950s.
Art Deco first appeared in Paris in the 1910s just before World War I and represented luxury, glamour, exuberance and faith in social and technological progress. It was an ornate style with rare and expensive materials, as well as new materials like stainless steel and reinforced concrete, which gave greater freedom of form.
The international style of Art Deco, which influenced Indian design, was known as Streamline Moderne and began in the 1930s. It was inspired by aerodynamic design and emphasized sleeker curving forms, polished surfaces, and sometimes nautical elements.
Through styling and design of the exterior and interior of anything from large structures to small objects, Art Deco has influenced buildings (from skyscrapers to cinemas), bridges, ships, ocean liners, trains, cars, trucks, buses, furniture, and everyday objects.
