Description

Set of 4 Mid-century design drawings of different kinds of chairs by the architect G.B. Mhatre. The drawings are not signed, but this was typical of him, so much so that Claude Batley (an English architect who was the President of the Indian Institute of Architects from 1921 to 1923) called him a ‘shadow architect’. G. B. Mhatre worked between 1931 and 1970. He studied in Sir JJ School of Art as well as the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) London. He began his practice at the dawn of Bombay’s Art Deco movement. However, Mahtre developed a unique language as his style borrowed from the prevailing trends of Art Deco to Modernism, as well as from traditional architectural styles. Mhatre also believed that style mattered in everything, whether in the design of buildings or furniture, tapestry, or even clothes.

Mid-Century Modern was a movement in interior design, product design, graphic design, architecture and urban development across the world from roughly 1945 to 1970. Scandinavia, in particular, had a great influence on mid-century modern furniture design, which was minimalist, clean-lined and looked to combine functionality with beauty, as well as being well-crafted, classic, and timeless. This is probably why mid-century furniture pieces are still so sought after today and easily fit into any style of home.
