Description

This brass (with some remains of silver plating) palki finial is from Maharashtra. Palanquin, or “palki”, are litter-type conveyances that have been in use in India for centuries. These finials would have adorned the pole ends that were used to support and carry the compartment or the deity in processions. Makara Yazhi is a kind of yali with the head and jaw of a crocodile, and an elephant's trunk. They are considered a protective force.
The size of the finial is 5.75 x 3 x 4.5 inches without the base. With the base, the size of the piece is 5.75 x 3 x 4.5 inches.
