Description

This very heavy and sturdy rug from the late 19th century is an extremely rare weaving from the Bijar region of the Alborz mountains in northern Persia. Referred to as a 'wagireh' or 'etcetera', the rug is meant to be a 'sampler' that shows the range of icons the weaver can weave. This example is replete with a variety of symbols, predominant among which are the four abstract long "mahi" or fish symbols.

Tribal carpets are typically made by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes from various parts of the world. Their designs are different from modern, commercial carpets, in that they are mostly raw, abstract and somewhat naïve. Typically, women weave the carpets without a set design in mind during the weaving process, which results in the variations in the patterns, and the irregular shapes of the carpets. These “perfect imperfections” are the delicate nuances, that add to the beauty of each one-of-a-kind handwoven carpet. Every tribal carpet has a unique story that comes from weaver’s thoughts and expressions. Elements like flowers, plants, human beings, birds, and animals such as dogs, sheep and camels often feature, giving a base to the storyline.

    CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Do not use any harsh brushes to clean the rug or carpet. Soft brooms can be used on a regular basis for cleaning. You can also vacuum regularly to keep dirt from getting trapped in fibres. If a spill occurs, blot immediately, but do not rub the stain. Expose the rug or carpet to the sun for some time if it gets wet. Rotate the rug occasionally to equalize wear. Use protectors under the legs of heavy furniture to avoid flattening and piling. If a thread comes loose, do not pull on it; instead, trim gently with scissors. Periodic professional cleaning of rugs and carpets is recommended.
