ABOUT Prashant Prabhu
Born in 1972, Prashant Prabhu is a watercolour artist with a fondness for painting landscapes, urbanscapes and temple scenes. After finishing his postgraduation in the field of Commerce from Podar College, Mumbai, Prabhu decided to follow his passion for art full-time. In a career spanning over 25 years, he has found his own visual vocabulary. After having dabbled in various media, he settled into watercolours as his favourite medium of expression, and today, is renowned for painting watercolour landscapes and urban scenes in his distinct style.
Prashant Prabhu’s way of painting landscapes is quite different; he has a minimalist approach while staying within the realistic genre. Bold washes and pristine whites of paper play an important role in his work. His compositional play in the genre makes him stand out from other traditional Indian landscape painters. Prabhu is very particular about the quality of paper and colours he uses in his work, with a focus on longevity. He spends a lot of time in “sadhana”, or practice, knowing that perseverance is critical for attaining mastery over a difficult medium such as watercolour.
A winner of the Maharashtra State Award in 2003, and a two-time finalist in the International Artist Magazine worldwide competition, Prabhu has also participated in marquee invite-only art camps such as Arts Trust - RPG, and Royal Watercolour Society India Camp. His cityscapes have been selected for the Royal Watercolour Society contemporary international exhibitions in 2016 and 2017. He has also shown at Parallax Art Fair in London in 2013. In August 2021, Prabhu was invited for Taoyuan Watercolour Biennale in Taiwan, where he was the only Indian among 17 international master watercolour artists.
Prashant Prabhu has held solo exhibitions at Jehangir Art Gallery (in 2001, 2006, 2011 and 2016), Nehru Centre, Mumbai (in 1996, 2007, 2009 and 2012), Lalit Kala Akademi, Delhi in 2017, and a few others. His 2006 solo exhibition in Jehangir Art Gallery was sponsored by Harsh Goenka, under the auspices of the RPG Group. His solo exhibition in 2007 in Nehru Centre was sponsored by VIP Luggage (Dilip Piramal). Prabhu has also participated in multiple group exhibitions in Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune and London. His art is part of important collections such as NGMA (Mumbai), HDFC, RPG Group, ICICI Bank, VIP, Onida and Concern India Foundation. Prashant Prabhu lives and works in Mumbai.
