Description
This is a Remington Travel-Riter Monarch Typewriter from 1963 in original case, and restored to working condition (no ribbon). It has been manufactured in Holland. The Monarch Typewriter Company was founded in 1904 by the Union Typewriter Company which was a huge trust that controlled the leading manufacturers of typewriters like Remington, American Writing Machine, Yost and Smith Premier. The Monarch typewriters were different than the already available machines because of their practicality, strong brand recognition and long endurance factor. The Monarch Typewriters have a significant place in history because these machines essentially made the Smith Brothers abandon their Smith Premier Typewriter Company to open the new L.C. Smith and Bros Typewriter Company. When the Union Typewriter company decided to manufacture visible writing machines through the new satellite company (The Monarch) while insisting that others retain their ‘blind writers’ for the time being, the Smith brothers sold out their interest in Smith Premier, moved across the town to build a new company and took with them the star engineer of the Union.
