Description

Ritual and ceremonial masks are an integral part of the traditional culture of many indigenous tribes in Africa. While there are differences in the significance or purpose of different masks in different cultures, some traits are common to most African cultures. All masks have a spiritual or religious meaning, and they are used in ritual dances or religious events. In most traditional African cultures, the person who wears the mask becomes a sort of medium between his or her community members, and the spirits.
This ceremonial mask is most likely from Cameroon in Central Africa or Mali in Western Africa. Made using indigenous African wood, it is probably from the 1970s and makes for a worthy collectible.
