Naina Maithani has always found solace in the vastness of the sky; it gives her room to dream, and for her soul to expand. Celebrating her affinity for horizons, Naina imagines pretty vistas in luminous hues. Her meditative canvasses invite us to touch the unknown and look beyond the visible. She evokes a sense of nostalgia with the warm glow emanating from the core colours of nature. Naina’s paintings remind us of distant mountains, drifting clouds, magical dawns and mysterious dusks. Boasting of an ethereal quality, they are emblems of hope and renewal, making us pause and observe the transition from day to night and night to day. Naina’s abstracts serve as a refuge, to lose ourselves in its endless horizons.
Naina has lived in different parts of the world, from Vietnam to Qatar. But it is the return to her roots - her hometown Dehradun, in Uttarakhand, India, that led her on a journey of spiritual transcendence. Naina spent most of her adult years away from Dehradun, painting her travelogue across the globe. Unexpected circumstances compelled her to move back to her hometown during the first Covid lockdown in 2020, and her experience of once again being surrounded by pristine nature, transformed her as a person and an artist.
We can’t leave behind who we are for long. For Naina, the move to Dehradun brought with it, the realization that her soul resides in the mountains, and a sense of gratitude for being born in a land with so much beauty around. Returning home as an artist, Naina began to see the place in a different light. Although much has changed in the valley with urbanization, the mountains and skies still hold their charm. For Naina, the complexities and chaos of city life have slowly dissolved, replaced with a sense of calmness only the mountains can bring. The crisp air, the shades of the sky and the endless sunsets have changed the seasons of her heart - healing her and bringing her closer to herself. It is this overwhelming emotion that she expresses through her abstract paintings, filled with the varied hues and textures of her surroundings. The unpredictability of life is what makes it so beautiful, and Naina’s unplanned return to her home took her on a journey of self-discovery and mindfulness.
