  • ABOUT K.G. Subramanyan

One of the pioneers of Indian modern art, Indian painter K.G Subramanyan was born in 1924 in Kerala. He is a recipient of the prestigious Padma Vibhushan in 2012 and the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Academy of Fine Art, Kolkata was bestowed upon him in 2005.

Subramanyan graduated from Kala Bhavan, Visva Bharati University in 1948, where he studied under the tutelage of Benode Behari Mukherjee, Nandalal Bose and Ramkinkar Baij. In 1956, he received the British Council Research Fellowship and briefly studied at the Slade School of Art, University of London. Subramanyan was a lecturer at the Faculty of Fine Arts in M.S. His works have been exhibited in several solo shows throughout his career. Using his in-depth knowledge of various artistic traditions, Subramanyan created images of wit and eroticism. His works are universal in their appeal in spite of drawing heavily from Indian legends and folklore.
