Description

This is a Victorian brass sextant by Frodsham and Keen, Liverpool, with skeletonised frame over a curved scale with silver inlay and pivoting arm. It also has a pivoting magnifier and is fitted with two sets of folding shades. Contained within a fitted box are also extra accessories. The box has an applied brass plaque engraved with "HMS Conway. The Trinity House Prize. Presented to W.A. Galbraith July 1904."
Trinity House is a charity dedicated to safeguarding shipping and seafarers, providing education, support and welfare to the seafaring community. HMS Conway was a naval training school or "school ship", founded in 1859 and housed for most of her life aboard a 19th-century wooden ship, that was originally stationed on the Mersey near Liverpool. Charles Frodsham (1810 - 1871) was a distinguished English horologist, establishing the firm of Charles Frodsham & Co, which remains in existence as the longest continuously trading firm of chronometer manufacturers in the world. This sextant was made by the Frodsham Company in collaboration with Keen.
