Description

This elegant brass prabhavali (the protective arch around the idol) is from Karnataka. The prabhavali is a representation of the tantras, which suggest that the deity be visualised as seated within or emerging out of the solar or lunar orb. At the apex of the of the prabhavali is a Kirtimukha - ‘the face of glory’ - the bulging face of a ravenous lion meant to avert malignant influences and protect. At the base of the prabhavali, which has been embellished with engraving work, are two makara out of whose open mouths the prabhavali emerges. They symbolize water, the source of all existence, and are an auspicious symbol.
One flame on the prabhavali has been lost to time. The size mentioned is with the custom-made stand.
