Description

This is a spectacular brass, lost-wax cast “Mother and Child” or “Krishna with his mother Yashoda” figure from North Karnataka or Maharashtra. Krishna is the god of compassion, tenderness, and love; and is one of the most popular and widely revered among Indian divinities. In this figure, Yashoda stands on a circular lotus flower pedestal above a square plinth holding the baby Krishna in her arm. Yashoda is decorated with jewellery like necklaces, a nose ring and bracelets produced with fine details. Her hair has been braided and hangs in a long, beautiful plait down her back.
In the lost-wax technique the piece is first sculpted from a mixture of beeswax, oil and camphor. The figure is then coated with clay and fired in an oven so the wax melts and flows out. Melted brass is then poured into the empty clay-mould. When the metal has cooled, the mould is broken off and “lost”, making each piece one of a kind.
