Description

"Maati ka bartan hai pyaare, maati mein mil jaana ha"...
Humans and the matki, both eventually return to Mother Earth at the end of their lives. This artwork is part of the 'Maati' series, which depicts human emotions while highlighting the humble ‘matki’ (earthen pots made of maati or mud), as the hero. Drawing parallels between ‘us’ and the matki, the artist has portrayed different facets of human life in this series of artworks.
This artwork, created on ceramic plates as a set of 3, highlights how every aspect of life has possibilities for multiple interpretations. When we form thoughts in our minds and articulate them through written or spoken words, it is not necessary that the receiver of that information interprets what we said, exactly how we meant it. Our ideas could be turned upside down in someone else's frame of reference. Similarly, this artwork, while created using symmetry, is infact an abstract depiction open to interpretation by the viewer. It can be displayed in different ways, depending on an individual's preferences.
The diameter of the plates is 10.5 inches, and the framed pieces measure 15 x 15 inches each.
  • ABOUT Ashu Gupta

Ashu Gupta is a contemporary artist whose practice is an exercise in introspection. A graduate of the National Institute of Fashion Design in Raipur, Ashu also holds a certificate from London’s Royal College of Art Contemporary Art Summer School. She developed her artistic practice through experimentation with pattern making, allowing intricate motifs to slowly emerge as larger forms. Working predominantly with pen and ink, Ashu uses hundreds of thousands of repeating patterns and stippling in her work. In recent times, she has also incorporated experiments with other techniques such as paper piercing and thread work, in her practice. Ashu’s deeply layered, mostly monochromatic compositions offer the possibility of a new interpretation with every glance. Her subjects are always emphasized, with nothing to distract from the beauty of her stunning pieces.

With an artistic style that is both distinct and confident, Ashu’s works have been collected by seasoned art collectors, in what are still the early years of her professional journey. Ashu has participated in several group exhibitions across India, and held solo exhibitions at Gallery Sublime, Bangalore in 2017 and at Artisera in August 2020 and August 2022. She has been nominated for the prestigious Lalit Kala Academy Awards (2016-17 and 2017-18) and the 2017 Bombay Art Society Awards. She was part of Madras Art Weekend 2024. The artist lives and works in Bangalore.
