Description

First UK edition of ‘Tent Life in Tiger Land and Sport and Work on The Nepal Frontier. Being twelve years sporting reminiscences of a pioneer planter in an Indian frontier district’ by the Hon. James Inglis, M.L.A. contains frontpiece and 21 chromo-lithograph views. Published in London by Sampson Low, Marston, and Company 1892. This was a double volume, a reprint of his popular ‘Sport and Work on the Nepal Frontier’, and the new volume ‘Tent Life in Tiger Land’. Inglis writes in the preface this was because he had had so many inquiries for the out of print work on Nepal. It was previously published in Sydney in 1888.

Background History:
James Inglis (1845-1908), author, merchant and politician, was born in Scotland. After a brief time in New Zealand, he became an indigo planter in India, where he published sporting verses under the pseudonym 'Maori'. Inglis, went to India at the end of 1866, and travelled and worked in India and the East, including as Famine Commissioner in Bhangulpore in 1875, and Executive Commissioner for the Government of India to the Melbourne International Exhibition of 1880–81. He then went to Australia where he became a politician in colonial New South Wales.
In the book he “describes an encounter with a rogue elephant in the Koosee Valley, a tributary of the Ganges. There are also episodes describing hunts for tiger - one with the hunters hidden in shallow pits - buffalo, bear, and pig sticking. The author also recalls beats after rhinoceros, tiger, leopard, and sambur in the Oudh jungles” (Czech, 110-11).

Condition:
Very good condition with original pictorial cloth, gilt. Extremities rubbed and with wear and some loss head and foot of spine. Ownership stamp of H.J. Wagg on front end papers. Cracked along front spine.
