Vishakha Apte
Vishakha Apte is a freelance artist based between Mumbai and Bhopal. Born in 1966 in Nashik, Maharashtra, she studied Painting at Sir J.J. School of Art, University of Bombay, graduating in 1987. In 1991, she moved to Bhopal to work at the Graphics Studio of Bharat Bhavan, where access to a community printmaking studio enabled her to pursue an independent practice in printmaking.
Vishakha’s early years were devoted primarily to etching and collagraphy, during which she explored and extended the expressive possibilities of these mediums. This investigation gradually evolved into relief works using carved and collaged handmade paper, mixed media, collage, and oil painting. Since 2014, paper pulp and ceramics have become integral to her practice, while etching continues to remain an important point of return. Working across diverse materials and techniques allows her to continually expand her visual language and discover new modes of expression.
For Vishakha, art is not merely a profession but a way of engaging with life. She views artistic practice as a process of cultivating greater sensitivity, self-awareness, and cultural insight. Although she considers gender secondary to artistic inquiry, subtle dimensions of feminine experience and perception quietly inform her work.
Vishakha’s early works emerged from the solitude of the studio, often featuring the recurring motif of feet as markers of human presence within intimate spaces. Over time, her focus shifted towards the contemporary urban environment and its psychological impact. Through layered, abstract compositions, she explores the tension between order and fragmentation, stillness and movement, and the interplay of living and static forms within the urban landscape.
Underlying her practice is a sustained exploration of aloneness, self-reflection, and the ways in which space, time, and human relationships shape emotional experience. Her works invite viewers to inhabit poetic, open-ended spaces that reflect the complexities, uncertainties, and quiet mysteries of contemporary life.
