Description

Theyyam body mask from Kerala in jackwood. This body mask is carved with two cobras (snakes) with their rearing heads at each shoulder. The collar is engraved with a four-layered neck ornament.
Theyyam is a ritualistic art form from northern Kerala where performers, often from lower castes, embody deities through elaborate dance, music, and mime. These body masks would be worn as spiritual attire as part of annual ceremonies (still practised today) to invoke demigods and spirits. These ceremonies last several evenings and involves the use of ritual objects such as this body mask, face mask, ornaments, as well as offerings.
