ABOUT Leticia Alvares

Born in 1992, Leticia Alvares completed her undergraduate degree from the Goa College of Art in 2015 and her Masters in Printmaking from M.S. University of Baroda in 2018. Her practice begins with moments that often go unnoticed — the quiet conversations, familiar landscapes, fleeting gestures, and rhythms of everyday life that gradually settle into memory. Leticia’s woodcuts are not intended as literal representations of people or places, but as impressions shaped by lived experience, emotion, and the passage of time.

Drawn to the slow and deliberate nature of woodcut, Leticia embraces the permanence of each carved mark, where every decision becomes an intrinsic part of the work’s history. She often works with found wood, allowing its natural grain, cracks, and imperfections to become active participants in the image-making process. Rather than imposing control over the material, she responds to its inherent qualities, allowing narratives to emerge through the act of carving.

Through the restrained visual language of black and white, Leticia seeks to distil each image to its essential form. Her practice explores themes of memory, belonging, and the spaces between silence and expression. The simplicity and intensity of her prints invite viewers to pause, reflect, and encounter echoes of their own experiences within the imagery.

For Leticia, printmaking extends beyond the creation of an image; it is a meditative process of listening, remembering, and uncovering the stories embedded within both the material and the human experience. Through the intimate dialogue between wood, mark, and memory, her works reveal the quiet poetry of everyday existence.
