ABOUT Biman Bihari Das
Born in 1943 in Tamluk, West Bengal, Biman Bihari Das is a renowned Indian sculptor who was awarded the Padma Shri in 2014 for his contributions to the field of art. Biman studied at the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, completing his Diploma in Modeling and Sculpture in 1966 with a first class (distinction). He later went on to become the Principal of the esteemed institution from 1994 to 2002.
Biman Bihar Das is known to create magic with bronze. Out of his most well-known series is the ‘Naika’ or ‘Nayika’ series, which convey energy and growth. Despite looking modern, these sculptures are linked to expressions in the earliest examples of Indian art and literature. He also works with marble, stone and wood.
Biman has held over 40 solo exhibitions in India and around the world, and participated in several group exhibitions and biennales, including those in Belgium, Seoul, Moscow and Japan. His work has been exhibited in New York, Cairo and Budapest, amongst other global cities. A retrospective of his work was held in 2005 at Sahitya Kala Parishad, sponsored by the Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata, and another retrospective was held in 2014 by Art Pilgrim in Mumbai. Besides the Padma Shri, Biman Bihari Das has won many other prestigious accolades such as the British Council Scholarship under Prof. Jeffrey Smedly, Department of Fine Art, Portsmouth, Polytechnic, UK, in 1973-74, the UGC Grant under the Indo-Hungarian Cultural Exchange Program in Budapest in 1993, a Fulbright Scholarship (USA) in 1997, and the ‘Kala Vibhusan’ from the All India Fine Arts and Craft Society in 2001. Biman’s sculptures can be found in many prestigious collections in India and abroad. The artist lives and works in both Delhi and Kolkata.
