Size: | 21 x 27 inches |
This artwork is from the ‘Sea Glass’ series, a collection of mixed media artworks by the artist, that have been inspired by the transformative journey of sea glass, and all the natural elements that converge in its formulation. Since her first encounter with sea glass on the beaches of Jordan, Mandira Ravindranath was instantly fascinated by the story behind its development. Her collection of artworks is an attempt to reimagine this path of metamorphosis, with the creation of unusual, compact panoramas of microcosms under the sea.
Starting out as everyday articles discarded at the seaside, the sharp, jagged edges of the broken glass pieces that eventually become sea glass, are abraded by sand and softened by water, becoming smooth to the touch, and frosted and translucent in appearance. Tumbled and tossed, sea glass is shaped moment by moment and layer by layer, until it is found washed up on shore, glowing by the water's edge.

New Delhi based artist Mandira Ravindranath’s incredibly detailed artworks are made up of doodles and minuscule patterns, executed with mindboggling perfection. Although she is professionally trained in Fashion Design, Mandira has always been deeply interested in illustration and line drawing. After working in the Indian fashion industry for nearly a decade, of which 7 years were spent working with acclaimed designer Tarun Tahiliani, Mandira entered the art world, having her first independent solo exhibition at the India Habitat Centre in Delhi in October 2014, and a second one in October 2017 at the Shridharani Gallery, Triveni Kala Sangam in Delhi.
Working mostly with pen and ink on paper as her medium, Mandira creates dizzying, elaborate worlds in black on white, which she sometimes accents with acrylic colours, applied in thick, textured layers, within geometric and abstract forms. Although she has always been a city-dweller, her inspiration comes mostly from nature and nature-derived elements.
