Sivabalan is a young artist, passionate about the water colour medium and prolific in its use. His brightly coloured paintings capture the essence of rural life, its changing seasons, its culture and festivities, and most importantly, its people. The sketches of men and women are reminiscent of drawings recorded in books about ethnic types and costumes made during the Company period. Having completed his B.F.A at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kumbakonam, Sivabalan went on to finish his Masters degree there as well. He says, “I was born and brought up in Kumbakonam, a town of temples surrounded by many villages. The town always had a culture of its own and a festive mood. Even today I enjoy and express it and it still influences me.”
He has participated in more than twenty five group exhibitions and camps and has held eleven one man shows. Among his awards are the Bard Fest Merit Award, Trichy, 1997, The State Award Oviya Nunkalai Kuzhu, Chennai 1999, and the Water Colour Award in 2000 from the Camlin Art Exhibition, Bangalore. His paintings are in many private collections in India and abroad.
