Born in the Latur, Maharashtra, Anand Panchal is a critically acclaimed artist who studied at the J.J School of Art in Mumbai. Lyrical, rustic worlds take centre stage in Panchal’s acrylics on canvas. His incandescent art documents the enduring soul of India, as seen in its indigenous culture and traditions. Urbanisation hasn’t yet caught up with the cosy settings that Panchal paints in a style that is part-folk, part-contemporary: Brahmin boys and girls who grow up on temple premises, little girls at village fairs, groups of shy children at play and village women in clusters. Anand Panchal sees India’s villages through a distinct lens, and paints his figures dressed in traditional clothes, their foreheads smeared with vermilion.
Capturing the simplicity of village life and its rich traditions, which time seems to have forgotten, the artist displays great range, punctuating the figurative and symbolic elements with abstract spaces, making his paintings appear vast as well as intimate. Like the notes beguiling of a lilting, many-hued raga, Panchal’s compositions are coloured in a radiant palette of brilliant reds and blues and ochres.
