Achutan Ramachandran, popularly known as A. Ramachandran, is a renowned Indian painter born in 1935 in Kerala. In 2005, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian honour. Initially, Ramachandran painted in an expressionist style which poignantly reflected the angst of urban life. The paintings were large, akin to murals, and comprised powerful figuration. By the 1980's however, Ramachandran's work underwent a sea-change. Urban reality was no longer a preoccupation. A tribal community in Rajasthan with its vibrant ethos gripped his imagination. Simultaneously, the colours and forms of the murals in the Kerala temples began to influence his mode of expression.
The most endearing quality of Ramachandran's works is that in almost every painting, the artist puts in an appearance. Sometimes he is metamorphosed as Vishnu, sometimes as the rain god painting the droplets that add up to a shower, or else as a fish or a bird sitting quietly in one corner, or perhaps as a baby in the fetal position. But he has the humility to make a mockery of himself and his art.
Limited Edition Prints are a series of identical prints of an artwork, commissioned by the artist. Restricted to a one-time printing of a certain number of pieces, each print is numbered and signed by the artist, establishing its’ authenticity.
Because the number of prints is limited, signed prints of acclaimed artists hold value, and can be investment-worthy, just like original works of art. Christie’s and Sotheby’s – the world’s two most renowned auction houses – hold auctions exclusively for prints. A Pablo Picasso print sold for US$1.7 million in 2010!
There are different techniques in printmaking, including offset printing, digital printing, lithography and serigraphy. Serigraphy, or silk screen printing is considered one of the most sophisticated techniques. In this process, thick, opaque colours are passed through the screen, creating prints with vibrant colours and beautiful textures, that make the artwork look just like a painting.
Works by any artist are limited, and prints are a fantastic way for acclaimed artists, to make their art available to a larger number of people. This makes limited edition prints popular amongst new art buyers as well as seasoned art collectors.
