The tradition of Thanjavur, or Tanjore painting, a classical South Indian painting style, was inaugurated by the town of Thanjavur (also known as Tanjore). It developed during the reign of the Maratha rulers between the 17th and 19th centuries. Tanjore paintings are characterized by rich, flat colours, simple compositions, glittering gold foil work, and the use of glass beads and sometimes precious and semi-precious gems.
