Living Architecture is a unique book that showcases photographs by Dr. Andreas Volwahsen, as independent artworks in their own right for the first time. An architectural historian of great repute, Volwahsen initially made these photographs to illustrate his academic books, ‘Living Architecture: Islamic India’ (1968) and ‘Living Architecture: India’ (1971). As illustrations, these photographs added descriptive, demonstrating the artists’ deep understanding of ancient Indian architecture, and also revealing undercurrents of German modernist photography.
The aesthetic considerations and impeccable compositions of these photographs create a balance between decorative elements, embellishments, and geometric structures, thereby enabling enhanced understanding and enjoyment of both the images and the buildings they depict. Volwahsen’s consistent use of black and white mutes any distracting details, and this combined with balanced, square format compositions encourages the viewer to penetrate the potentially bewildering and overwhelming designs of the intricate structures, to focus on form and symmetry.
With an original essay by Tyga Helme that provides wider context and deeper insight, the extraordinarily beautiful and inspiring images in this publication highlight the design and technical perfection of India’s architecture, and serve as odes to the architects and craftsmen that created the marvels featured herein.
