An old piece, this paintings depicts a bejeweled Lord Krishna with a pot of butter (makhan), which he used to be very fond of. Some parts of this painting have gold leaf, and others are embossed with gesso work.
The tradition of Thanjavur, or Tanjore painting, a classical South Indian painting style, was inaugurated by the town of Thanjavur (also known as Tanjore). It developed during the reign of the Maratha rulers between the 17th and 19th centuries.
Tanjore paintings are characterized by rich, flat colours, simple compositions, glittering gold foil work, and the use of glass beads and sometimes precious and semi-precious gems.
