Biswajit Mondal’s playful, whimsical paintings are tinged with romance and longing. The marionette-like joker/jester/clown features as the staple and omnipresent character in his works, playing the role of an Everyman. The world is his stage – sometimes, he is the thinker, lost in thought. Sometimes, he is a romantic serenader, playing the flute and the violin. Sometimes, he is seen posing with a flower, like a hoary Mughal king.
A graduate of the Indian College of Arts & Draftsmanship in Fine Arts, Mondal’s works offer sensitive, touching and ironic perspectives on modern life. The joker combines whimsy, hope and laughter as well as wistful melancholy. Like a pantomime, the paintings have a multitude of threads and interpretations and playfully lead the viewer on to decode and explore them. Cubist influences are tangible in the Kolkata-based artist’s art works, and there is a palpable vibrancy in the colours used. Mondal takes you tumbling down the rabbit hole where fantasy and reality intersect.
