Born in 1918, Paritosh Sen was an Indian artist, illustrator and writer who is widely recognised for his caricatures, inspired by socio-political issues, and female nudes. At an early age, he ran away from his home in Dhaka to learn painting at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Madras (now Chennai).
In 1942, Paritosh Sen moved to Calcutta, where he and his friends, formed the Calcutta Group - an association of artists that aimed to incorporate contemporary values in Indian art. In 1949, Sen left for Paris, where he studied at Andre Lhote's school, Academie Grand Chaumier, Ecole des Beaux Arts and Ecole des Louvre. During this time, he also met Pablo Picasso, who left an indelible impression on Sen.
Strong and bold strokes are a distinct feature of Paritosh Sen’s work. He frequently depicted mundane activities of everyday life in his art, rendered with a sense of cynicism and detachment. Sen exhibited extensively in India and internationally, in Paris, London, Germany, Tokyo and the US. Also a prolific writer, Sen published many works in both Bengali and in English. He passed away in 2008.
