Burma (Myanmar) has a long history with the crafting of silver articles, which gained prominence during the British colonial era (1824 to 1948). Elaborate and exquisite, Burmese silver pieces are known for their depictions of characters from Buddhist mythology as well as from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. They are also characterised by the raised relief work created in the method of silver sheet embossing. Silver sheet embossing is an old artform that involves hammering a sheet of silver against a mould to give it basic shape, and then carving the details on the front side of the hollow structure with the help of sharp tools.
This old hexagonal box depicts a different character on each side and another one on the cover. With each detail on the figures rendered with unmatched precision, the box is intricate in its carvings and etchings.
