Artist Profile
Waswo X. Waswo is an American photographer and poet, born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Currently based in Udaipur, Rajasthan, he is best known for his hand-tinted black and white photographs of people from the streets of Rajasthan, shot against dramatic cloth backgrounds in his studio.
Waswo’s works are rare in that they are immediately accessible to the viewer, while having been infused with layers upon layers of meaning. These include his sepia toned photographs of Indian landscapes and people, compiled in a book called 'India Poems: The Photographs', and his autobiographical miniature work, painted on wasli paper by R. Vijay (of the famous Vijayvargiya art family) in a style that is reminiscent of Mughal miniatures and the Pichwais of Nathdwara.
An internationally acclaimed artist, Waswo X. Waswo's work is part of several collections across the world, including the Haggerty Museum of Art, Marquette University, USA; the Golda Meir Library, USA, Carrol College Art Archives, USA; Delhi Art Gallery, New Delhi and the Guild Art Gallery, Mumbai among others.
