Description

This well detailed silver head of Shiva has been made in the style of a Mukhalinga. Mukhalinga literally means 'linga with a face'. The linga (or lingam) is an abstract representation of the Hindu god Shiva, seen as a symbol of energy. The mukha, is a covering used to give a face, or iconic form to the abstract Shiva Lingam. Worshippers believed that the face would allow them to see, and be seen by Lord Shiva.

An old collectible, the piece has been crafted using the technique of silver sheet embossing, which is an old artform that involves hammering a sheet of silver against a mould to give it basic shape, and then carving the details on the front side of the hollow structure, with the help of sharp tools.
