This artwork is made on vintage paper from a personal gardening journal, from 1955. Note from the artist, Bakula Nayak, describing the story behind the artwork:
"Mary’s Gardening Journal is intense - too intense for me because of the inconsequential details about her plants. It made me wonder if she was a gardening “scientist” who kept details of her experiments until I found an entry that said, “pot covered with Mildred’s shoe boxes”. I mean, how does it matter whose shoe box it is? Aha! Mary was just a horribly meticulous person like my husband, taking great pains to go over each minute step of her gardening journey in excruciating detail.
On the other hand, if she had time to make such detailed entries every day, she probably didn’t have a large family and everyday chores. Then who were all these fruits and flowers for? I’m sure the creatures of her garden had wonderful “par-teas” in there. Or perhaps the neighbourhood kids munched on the melons? Or, maybe she just loved having a lovely garden to look at and enjoy her tea? Whatever it was, her passion just shines through with every entry. Gardening must have been her life…
…but who is Mildred? And why did she give her shoe boxes to Mary?"
  • ABOUT Bakula Nayak

A self-confessed stubborn romantic, Bakula Nayak noses out the magic stifled in the everyday, and elevates the mundane into something bright, dreamy and unique through her art.

With an undergraduate degree in architecture and an MS in Communication Design from Pratt Institute, Manhattan, Bakula began her career at a fragrance house in New York. Following this, she pulled a long stint in retail package design with global brands such as L’oreal, Mikasa and Ralph Lauren, before moving back to her hometown in Bangalore.

Bakula’s passion for collecting vintage paper, fused with her love for imagining the life stories of people who owned them, translates into tangible works of art. She breathes new life into the now forgotten pieces of beauty by illustrating on them. Gorgeously aged vintage papers form the perfect canvas to interpret the realities of Bakula’s world. Her remarkable pen and ink drawings and illustrations, jam-packed with funny, delightful and eccentric characters – hatted birds, diving penguins, fish with pirate eye-patches, sleeping cats, and dancing flamingos – are both vintage and contemporary, new and old, timeless and unique.

An unfinished inventory of her daydreaming and her love affair with all things vintage - her work reflects her longing for romance, aesthetics, poetry and seduction in everything. In her latest series, Bakula Nayak pays tribute to love in all its forms – not just romantic love, but the love of parents, love for things, her own love for tea, love for the family, friends, the earth, gardens and more. She also taken inspiration from the ancient Indian poet Kalidasa’s poem about love, Ritusamhara, interpreting the love between newly married lovers across different seasons in the year.
