Burma (Myanmar) has a long history in crafting of silver articles, which gained prominence during the country's British colonial era (1824 to 1948). Elaborate and exquisite, Burmese silver pieces often depict figures from Buddhist mythology as well as from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. They are characterised by raised relief work, created using the method of silver sheet embossing. Silver sheet embossing is an old artform that involves hammering a sheet of silver against a mould to give it basic shape, and then carving the details on the front side of the hollow structure, with the help of sharp tools.
This exquisitely crafted circular Burmese box depicts human figures, along with animal and nature-inspired motifs all around. The top/cover features an embossed elephant with a rider.
