ABOUT THE COLLECTION
Born in 1970 in Assen, Netherlands, Juul Kraijer is a Dutch visual artist whose principal mediums are drawing and photography, and occasionally, sculptures and video-works. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and graduated in 1994 with a series of large format charcoal drawings.
Drawing upon surrealist photography, Kraijer uses models as vehicles for ideas rather than portraits. She incorporates snakes, barn owls and other creatures, which serve to displace the model and overturn the traditional hierarchy between model and accessory, human and animal. Awarded the Thérèse van Duyl-Schwartze Portretprijs in 2009, her works are a part of numerous international collections, including many private and company collections in Europe, U.S.A. and India.
