Jayashree Chakravarty

Artist Profile

An acclaimed contemporary artist, Jayashree Chakravarty graduated in Fine Arts from Viswa Bharati University, Santiniketan in 1978 and went on to pursue a postgraduate diploma at M.S. University, Baroda in 1980. She received a Canadian grant in 1982 to study art, and later migrated to France. Jayashree’s work is primarily influenced by French Impressionism and Byzantine Mosaic design. Her time in France broadened her horizons and redefined the boundaries of her imagination.

Constantly evolving as an artist, Chakravarty’s art, which is mostly autobiographical, has a dream like quality. Superimposed imagery and fluid visuals are characteristic of her work. She uses many recurring motifs in her art, most of them influenced by nature in some way.

An extremely experimental artist, Jayashree Chakravarty has exhibited her work in many shows across India and Sweden. She is a recipient of the prestigious Bombay Art Society Award (1980) and has received an honourable mention at the Asian Art Biennale Dhaka in Bangladesh (1997).
