  • ABOUT Shankar Ghosh

Born in 1934, Shankar Ghosh is an acclaimed Indian sculptor. He studied first at the Indian Art College in 1951, and then continued at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Calcutta from 1952 to 1957. Shankar’s works are technically superior, and each piece is imbibed with a translucent clarity and an almost ethereal quality. His sculptures are inspired by various aspects of the environment, human forms and different shapes. While they are not large in size, the sculptures appear monumental owing to their form and composition. The artist experiences sheer exhilaration while creating these masterpieces, using the complex technique of bronze casting.

Shankar Ghosh has held over 10 solo exhibitions, the first being in 1963. He has also participated in more than 100 group exhibitions across India, including at Lalit Kala Academy (Delhi), Academy of Fine Arts (Kolkata), Birla Academy of Art and Culture (Kolkata) and All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society (Delhi). His sculptures are part of important private and institutional collections such as the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi and Chitrakala Parishad, Bangalore.
